Why should I buy a home in Naxos? How does it rank compared to other destinations in Greece for me? What are the most popular areas to buy a home in Naxos? In this article, we’ll take you on a tour of Naxos. Throughout our article, you will see quotes from Steph, a travel blogger and Instagram personality who has travelled all over Greece.

About Naxos

Naxos is one of the Cycladic islands, just 100 nautical miles from Athens’s port. The Cycladic islands are some of the best islands for vacationing in Greece because they are in the middle of the Aegean Sea. Naxos island is the largest in the Cyclades group.

Naxos Town

Naxos’s main town is famous for its big Portara. It is the remains of an ancient temple to Apollo that was not finished. In Naxos town, it is not just traces of the ancient greeks you can see. It is also the impact of the Venetians and the Franks who took over the Greek islands at different times. In the alleys of the old town, you will feel like you are in the Middle Ages.

Portara of Naxos

The Portara of Naxos (also called the Great Door) is a giant marble doorway next to the port, on the tiny island of Palatia. It was constructed in the 6th century BC by the ruler of Naxos, Lygdamis. He wanted to built the highest and most incredible building in Naxos, but when war came with Samos, the construction of the temple stopped.

Experts don’t know exactly what the temple of the Portara was designed for, but some people say it was a temple to Apollo, the Greek god of music. Today, the Portara is the ideal place in Naxos to enjoy the sunset and to go for a walk after a delicious taverna meal.

We asked Steph to share a few reasons why the Dutch would like Naxos.

Other Sights in Naxos

Naxos island is known for its impressive sculptures. The archaic kouri are massive, half-complete statues of young men that have been in the same spot for hundreds of years. The other kouri are in a garden at Melanes, and at the coast at Apollona.

Naxos also has an impressive mountainous landscape, and of course multiple sandy beaches that are popular in the Greek summer.

Food in Naxos

Naxos island is a heaven for food lovers in Greece. Naxos has many local products, especially its cheese. Graviera and Kefalotiri are the best options. In some areas, the Kefaloriti will be called “arseniko”, which translates to “masculine. Order some potatoes as well, which are grown locally. End your meal with a glass of kitro, which is a liquor made in Naxos and comes in three versions: green, yellow, and clear.

Rating Naxos for the Dutch

Rating Methodology

How did we decide what factors are most important for Dutch home buyers? To solve this challenge, we first asked our sales and legal team, who offer consultation and legal handling to dozens of Dutch clients (both those who do and don’t purchase a property). We then combined this data with a small survey of Dutch clients who ultimately purchased a home to find out their highest priorities.

Sea View

Naxos is famous for its Mediterranean views. The island has 150 kilometers of coastline. Some popular areas to get a sea view near Olympus are Koronos, Halki, Filoti, Kinidaros, Melanes, Keramoti, Apeiranthos, Agia Anna, Eggares, Galanado, Moutsouna, and Apollonas.

Rating: 10 out of 10

Direct Flights

From the Netherlands, you cannot fly directly to Naxos, because the island doesn’t have an international airport. The closest islands with direct flights from Amsterdam or Rotterdam are Mykonos and Santorini. Note that you will need to take a ferry from Mykonos or Santorini to reach Naxos. Find more routes on Rome2Rio.

Rating: 8 out of 10

Property Prices

Prices in Naxos are higher than the national average in Greece, and lower than the most popular islands around it, like Paros and Santorini. According to national averages from Spitogatos, prices in the Cyclades are 3500 Euros/sqm.

Because Spitogatos doesn’t list average prices for Naxos alone, we did the math ourselves, filtering with the location “Naxos” and finding an estimate based on 75 homes for sale. Prices in Naxos are on average 2500 Euros/sqm, which is a lot lower than other islands in the Aegean like Santorini or Mykonos.

Rating: 8 out of 10

Internet Speed

Internet Speeds are available in the Cyclades via Speedtest by Ookla. Naxos isn’t listed, so we used the nearby island of Syros as a benchmark. You can expect a speed of 35 MBPS. Compared to other areas of Greece, this is slightly below average.

Rating: 8 out of 10

English Speakers and Expatriate Community

If you choose one of Naxos’s most popular towns, like the main Naxos town, you will surely find English speakers. In the winter, when the tourists leave and only local Greeks remain, you will likely see fewer English speakers.
