What does Expedia, one of the largest booking sites in the world, tell us about the biggest travel trends coming next year? Using data from over 25,000 of its travellers, Expedia Group tells us what is coming for travel in 2025.
Visiting Movie Sets
Travellers now have more interest in visiting their favourite movie sets. Some examples include the Sicily Hotel, which is featured in The White Lotus, as well as Malta’s filming locations for Gladiator 2. Some fan favourites also include Game of Thrones filming locations in Croatia. Some of the most famous filming locations in Greece include the White House in Kalami Bay on Corfu (where “Meet the Durrells” was filmed), the island of Amorgos (where “The Big Blue” was filmed), and the Cretan Stavros Beach (where “Zorba the Greek” did his famous dance).
Detour Destinations
In 2025, travelers are veering off the well-trodden path to explore Detour Destinations—emerging locations that offer a more intimate and less crowded alternative to traditional tourist hubs. Destinations like Reims, France, Brescia, Italy, and Krabi, Thailand are gaining popularity as people seek quieter, more authentic travel experiences. In Greece, there are hundreds of islands with fewer than 10,000 residents. With 63% of travelers expressing interest in these less-visited spots, this trend signals a move towards uncovering hidden gems that promise new adventures away from the crowds.
Travel for Artisan Goods
The desire to collect unique, locally-made products while traveling is driving the Goods Getaways trend. More and more, travelers are visiting local markets, artisan shops, and specialty stores to find exclusive items that reflect the culture and flavor of their destination. From rare chocolates in Belgium to locally crafted teas in Japan, these “shopping expeditions” have become integral parts of travel, particularly for Gen Z.
For this generation, the souvenirs they bring home aren’t just keepsakes—they’re meaningful mementos that connect them to the places they’ve visited. In Greece, there are many islands with unique artisan goods. Symi and Kalymnos, for example, are known for their sea sponges. Tinos is known for its marble sculpture.
All-Inclusive Travel
Once known for budget trips, the All-Inclusive resort experience is being completely revamped for 2025, and Gen Z is leading the charge. Today’s all-inclusive resorts are all about luxury, variety, and tailored experiences, attracting younger travelers who appreciate the convenience and value they offer. With a 60% year-over-year increase in searches for all-inclusive accommodations, top hotel brands like Hyatt and Marriott are enhancing their offerings, ensuring these resorts are as stylish and sophisticated as they are convenient. A selection of all-inclusive experiences are also available in Greece.
JOMO Travel
The rise of JOMO (Joy of Missing Out) is reshaping the way people approach vacations. While many once craved the busiest, most popular destinations, a growing number are seeking solace in slower, quieter trips. JOMO travelers focus on inner peace and relaxation, preferring destinations that offer tranquility, natural beauty, and opportunities to disconnect. This shift represents a broader movement towards mindful travel, where the goal is not to be everywhere, but to truly be present.
