Greece’s Best Architects | A31

A31 Identity

A31 was founded in 2003 by  Praxitelis Kondylis, a young architect with extensive experience abroad, who decided to open his own practice in Athens. It was not long before A31 architecture started to take on design and construction projects in the rest of Greece and Cyprus.

Also on the team is Panagiotis Karras, a Civil Engineer, who formed Α31 ARCHITECTURE  CONSTRUCTION, supplementing their existing services with construction as well. Today, A31 has grown to include a group of architects, designers, and engineers. They are characterized by their clean-cut layout and honest construction, tailored to the needs of people as well as the land and the setting concerned.

A31 International Reach

A31 has received a number of awards in international competitions and has also been exhibited in museums and public spaces in Athens, Barcelona, Budapest, Bilbao, Nicosia, and Piran. Articles about A31 have been published both in Greek and international journals and periodicals.

A31 Founder

Praxitelis Kondylis | Founder, Principal Architect and Designer

Praxitelis was born in Athens and graduated from the Technical University of Budapest School of Architecture (BME) with a Master’s of Science degree in Architecture and Architectural Engineering. He then studied at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC), where he received a Master’s of Architecture degree in Interior Design and attended the Doctoral Programme in the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB).

He took part in a research program “El sentido de la Arquitectura Moderna”, which was held at the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB) by Helio Piñón (Professor and collaborator of Enric Miralles). In Barcelona, he collaborated with local architecture firms, and in 2003, Praxitelis decided it was time to open his own studio in central Athens. Not long after, A31 was born.

A31 Philosophy

A31 describes their philosophy as follows:

“To be giving form in ideas which are determined by genuine needs – that is what truly defines architecture. To be expressing the spirit of your time with the means that it provides you – to be fulfilling the needs in the lives of your fellow men. To be seeing clearly the needs of your times and to be working towards resolving them. To be stating the problem correctly. To be sensing the character of a scenery and to be looking to express that through your work. To be seeking to provide man with even more life joy… Behold, that is architecture!” (Aris Konstaninidis, 1942)

In, short, A31 believes that architecture is a combination of art and science. It is a craft that satisfies the needs of people inside the building, while also being pleasing aesthetically.

A31 Projects

Some of A31’s most impressive projects include:

Latypi Residence in Mykonos, The OGarden Apartments, and the Ilya Botanic Suites in Alonissos.
