The island of Gavdos is a hidden gem. It is the southernmost place to visit both in Greece and in Europe. The island of Gavdos belongs to Crete and is technically in the Chania prefecture. Gavdos is closer to Africa than to Athens and is about 26 miles from the city of Chora Sfakion (Sfakia) in Crete. The island is small - about 32 square kilometers - so it is easily explored in a few days. An even smaller island, Gavdopoula, is found nearby. The landscape features pristine beaches and greenery of pine and juniper trees, just like in southern Crete.

The first windmills of Greece were built in the 12th century. In their heyday, more than 50,000 mills were built, 2,000 of which could be found in the Aegean islands. The windmills were a place of production for local grain, and they were a key part of Greece’s economic history. Combined with the scenery of the Mediterranean Sea and the blue and white buildings of Cyclades, the whitewashed mills are an iconic part of Greece's landscape.

Cretan music is the oldest music in Greece and perhaps all of Europe. Even in ancient times, excavations show that in Crete, there was music. ​​When the Venetians ruled Crete, the Italians helped create music schools in the area and added influence from Byzantine music. As a result, Cretan music is a lot different than the music on the mainland. It is complicated and in ⅞ or 9/8 time, which are rare in Western music.

As part of the effort to complete its Forest Cadastre, Greece has re-surveyed its land to separate public forest land from privately owned land. Declaring properties to the Land Registry has not been simple for Greece's cities, since many municipalities lack ownership deeds for schools, municipal buildings, and public squares. Forest land includes grasslands on semi-mountainous, mountainous, and uneven terrain; parts of parks or groves that have non-forest vegetation but are organically connected to the whole park or grove; and an organic set of wild plants with a woody trunk on the necessary surface of the ground.
