Alekos Fassianos, the iconic Greek painter, opened the doors of his home and art studio to the public as part of the Athens Design Forum. This event marked a celebration of modern Greek design, showcasing exhibitions from the likes of Carwan Gallery and up-and-coming talents such as Kostas Lambridis.

What Makes Alekos Fassianos’s Home Unique?

Fassianos’s Athens residence is a perfect blend of his artwork and Greek modernist design principles. Built in collaboration with architect Kyriakos Krokos, the home combines modern materials like concrete and steel with ancient Cycladic design principles, which prioritize light and air. The house, filled with Fassianos’s artwork, is a testament to both his heritage and creativity.

Why Is This Home Significant?

This marks the first time Fassianos’s home has been opened to the public, thanks to an initiative led by his daughter, Viktoria Fassianou, through the Athens Design Forum. Fassianos, who gained recognition in the Paris art scene in the 1960s before returning to Athens, infused his identity as an Athenian into his life and work. His daughter’s efforts to share this intimate space with visitors reveal a unique side of the artist’s life.

How Does Fassianos’s Work Reflect His Greek Identity?

According to Fassianou, her father’s work is deeply rooted in Greek identity, even during his time abroad in Paris. Fassianos was heavily influenced by ancient Greek texts and culture, applying the same philosophy to both his art and the design of his home, which incorporates handmade details crafted by local artists.

“The concept of Greekness is central to my father’s work,” says Fassianou. “Even living in these faraway cities, he focused on his core identity as an Athenian.”

What’s Next for Fassianos’s Artistic Legacy?

Though Fassianos has stepped back from his career, his studio remains full of his work and tools. Fassianou, who is managing her father’s estate, is dedicated to preserving his legacy while fostering the next generation of Greek artists. Future plans include a museum, but for now, opening the family home has allowed the public a glimpse into his world.
