Characterized as a traditional settlement, the village Margariti was established by the Venetians around 1430 AD. Following the fall of the Byzantine Empire and the occupation of the area by the Ottoman Turks, the Byzantine fortress dominating the area was rebuilt into an Ottoman castle in 1549, which was captured by the Venetians in 1571 and immortalized in Antonio Vassilacchi’s painting “The Capture of Margariti”, adorning the Doge’s Palace in Venice. The ruins of that castle still dominate the landscape, while the village itself boasts several mansions, some of which have been renovated. Its proximity to Parga, Syvota, the Ionian Sea coastline, but also the major cities of Ioannina and Preveza, as well as its excellent climate, render Margariti an ideal base to explore the western part of mainland Greece.
