It is now 100 days to go until the start of the Olympic Games in Paris, and the iconic flame is lit. The ceremony was held at the birthplace of the ancient Olympics – Olympia in Greece. The flame represents hope and peace and will travel all across Greece until it travels on boat to France. The Olympic flame will get to Marseille on May 8th. It will arrive in Paris for the Opening Ceremonies on the 26th of July.

Thomas Bach, the IOC President, was quoted in the torch-lighting event:

“The Olympic Games are the only event that brings the entire world together in peaceful competition. The Olympic athletes send this powerful message: yes, it is possible to compete fiercely against each other and at the same time live peacefully together under one roof. The athletes will shine and show us what greatness humans are capable of with all their excellence, determination and resilience.”

Olympic Flame Travels by Land and Sea

The lighting ceremony took place at the Temple of Hera, and there were many references to the ancient Olympic Games in Greece. Along with an olive branch, which symbolizes peace, the flame was passed to the first runner.

The Olympic flame will travel across the Mediterranean on the historic French ship, also called Belem. The journey is a symbol of the friendship between the two countries, and when Belem arrives in France, the real celebrations for the Olympics will start.

How Many People Carry the Olympic Torch?

10,000 people in total will carry the flame over 69 days. It will pass through 400 cities and 65 regions of France, reaching even to territories like Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, French Polynesia, Réunion and New Caledonia.

Greek Desserts

What do Greek desserts have to do with the ancient Olympics? Loukoumades are deep-friend honey doughnuts, and are also popular in other countries. The Greek version of loukoumades usually is covered in sugar syrup, honey, cinnamon, and sesame seeds. During the Olympic Games in 776 BC, they were offered to the winners of the games, in addition to an olive wreath.
