Believe it or not, some travelers are choosing where to travel based on TikTok. It is becoming a marketing tool for the tourist industry, and, with such a large user community – 1.7 billion in 2023– TikTok reaches audiences of all ages. Users find new destinations and travel experiences using TikTok, while local tourism authorities are using it as a way to market to new visitors.
TikTok is not just useful for seeing new destinations, but also for restaurants, activities, and accommodation. Based on a recent study by Greece-based digital marketing agency Tourix, 32 percent of users have chosen a hotel/accommodation because of relevant content they saw on TikTok. 28 percent of users browsed TikTok to look for a museum or archaeological site, and 18 percent used it to find a new city or beach.
Out of all age groups using the platform, 35 percent use it to get inspiration for new travel destinations. Because of this, the Greek Tourism Organization has created an official account on Tiktok. Other Greek destinations you will find on TikTok are Agios Nikolaos on Crete, Thessaloniki, the islands of Kefalonia and Karpathos, and the northern Greek city of Drama. Kefalonia’s promotional video has been particularly successful and has gathered almost 2 million views.
Agios Nikolaos is one of the most popular towns in Crete, and it is the capital town of Lassithi. In the area, you will find the natural beauty of the salt lake Voulismeni and an impressive background of red rock and trees. A southern section of the lake has a picturesque harbor with fishing boats. Agios Nikolaos is known most for its archaeological, folklore, and natural history museums, its Orthodox churches, its traditional squares, and of course its delicious cafés and restaurants.
Karpathos is a narrow, long island that is divided by a string of mountains with an altitude of 1200 meters. Karpathos is unique for its wild beauty, magnificent beaches, and traditional hospitality. Unlike islands like Santorini and Mykonos, Karpathos is not heavily visited because it is farther from the mainland. In the south of Karpathos island, you will find Pigadia, the island’s capital. The northern part of the island, on the other hand, is dotted with quaint villages and keeps its traditional feeling.
Thessaloniki is the second biggest city in Greece, located in the north of the country, in the region of Central Macedonia. Thessaloniki natives refer to the city as the “co-capital.” Thessaloniki’s rich history is evident around almost every corner, and the city’s vibrant cultural life attracts over 7.9 million visitors annually! The historical sites in Thessaloniki date as early as 315 BC, when the Macedonian King Cassander named the city after Alexander’s the Great half-sister. Also worth visiting is the 6km-long waterfront promenade.
Other areas of Greece that regularly post on their TikTok are the island of Kythira in the Aegean, Parga in Epirus, Katerini in Macedonia, and the town of Chania in Crete. The famous islands of Corfu, Zakynthos, Serifos and Amorgos have also started posting regularly.
