Best Mountains in the Peloponnese for Americans

Taygetus (Taygetos) Mountain Range

The Taygetus mountain range is the highest in the Peloponnese, with its peak, Prophet Elias, reaching 2,404 meters. This range offers numerous hiking trails that cater to different skill levels.

 

Main Hiking Trail: The E4 European long-distance path traverses the Taygetus range, offering breathtaking views and diverse landscapes, from lush forests to alpine terrains.

 

Key Highlights: The Viros Gorge and the Langada Pass are must-see spots, offering dramatic scenery and challenging routes for avid hikers. Viros Gorge descends from the foot of Profitis Ilias and it disgorges itself into the sea at Kardamili, while Langada Pass is the road between Sparta and Kalamata that cuts through The Taygetos Mountains is a wonderful drive.

Mainalo Mountain

Located in the heart of Arcadia, Mount Mainalo is a hiker’s paradise. Its highest peak, Ostrakina, stands at 1,981 meters.

 

Main Hiking Trail: The Menalon Trail, a certified European long-distance path, covers 75 kilometers through stunning natural landscapes and picturesque villages.

 

Key Highlights: The trail passes through the Lousios Gorge, ancient monasteries, and traditional settlements like Dimitsana and Stemnitsa, offering both natural beauty and cultural insights.

Key Highlights: The peak of Mount Erymanthos offers panoramic views, while the surrounding areas are rich in flora and fauna. The waterfall of Tethreas nearby the old monastery of Taxiarchon is another highlight, providing a refreshing stop amidst your magical, yet challenging, hike.
