A Major Leap Forward for Greek Islands
Greek islands are set to experience a digital revolution. Vodafone Greece recently announced that by this summer, at least ten islands will enjoy ultra-high-speed internet of up to 1 Gbps. This milestone is part of a €40 million investment in state-of-the-art fiberoptic technology. The ambitious project includes 670 kilometers of subsea and 800 kilometers of underground cables, connecting islands in the Cyclades (Syros, Tinos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, and Santorini) with the Dodecanese (Kos and Rhodes) and Crete (Chania and Sitia). The Ionian island of Corfu will also be linked to the network on mainland Greece. These advancements are more than just technological upgrades; they are reshaping opportunities in education, healthcare, tourism, and remote work. As Nikos Plevris, Network Director of Vodafone Greece, emphasized:
“We are creating new perspectives for our subscribers and the regional development of our country as a whole. Ensuring equal access to digital technologies opens new paths for communication, work, and tourism.”
High-Speed Internet Meets Rising Demand
The demand for better connectivity in Greece has grown steadily in recent years. With its stunning islands attracting millions of tourists and an increasing number of remote workers, reliable internet is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity. The fibre-optic network’s rollout will significantly enhance the online experience for households, businesses, and travelers. Whether you’re a local resident streaming content, a business managing operations, or a remote worker collaborating online, these high-speed connections promise smoother, uninterrupted access.
Bridging the Digital Gap
While Greece’s internet speeds have historically lagged behind other European nations, the recent investments are changing the narrative. Fixed internet speeds, which once placed Greece in 84th place globally, are being bolstered by fiberoptic technology, particularly in urban centres and tourist hubs. Mobile internet, which already performs well with speeds averaging 97.5 Mbps, is becoming even more reliable with expanded 4G and 5G coverage. These advancements are a game-changer for islands like Crete, Santorini, Mykonos, and Corfu, ensuring that even remote locations enjoy connectivity that rivals that of major cities.
