The Castle Town of Monemvasia is one of the most impressive and well-preserved places in Greece. It is found in the southeastern area of the Peloponnese on a sea rock, where a city was built in Medieval times. Back in those times, the city was built there because it was not visible to enemies on the mainland. The only way to visit at the time was by boat. The name of Monemvasia, for this reason, translates to “single passage.” The town of Monemvasia is one of the most romantic places in all of Greece. Some of the old mansions in the town have been converted into guesthouses and boutique hotels. Antique churches are scattered around the town, like the Agia Sofia from the 12th century and the Panagia Chrissafitissa, which combines Byzantine and Venetian elements.

If you’ve spent time on the island of Crete, you’ve likely heard already about the main sites - the beaches of Elafonisi, the town of Rethymnon, the hub of Chania, and the archaeological wonders at Knossos. Although Crete receives a large number of visitors annually, there are many sites that tourists overlook. Crete is a huge island and is filled with hidden beaches, gorges, and unique landscapes which aren’t found anywhere else in Greece.

The island of Gavdos is a hidden gem. It is the southernmost place to visit both in Greece and in Europe. The island of Gavdos belongs to Crete and is technically in the Chania prefecture. Gavdos is closer to Africa than to Athens and is about 26 miles from the city of Chora Sfakion (Sfakia) in Crete. The island is small - about 32 square kilometers - so it is easily explored in a few days. An even smaller island, Gavdopoula, is found nearby. The landscape features pristine beaches and greenery of pine and juniper trees, just like in southern Crete.

The first windmills of Greece were built in the 12th century. In their heyday, more than 50,000 mills were built, 2,000 of which could be found in the Aegean islands. The windmills were a place of production for local grain, and they were a key part of Greece’s economic history. Combined with the scenery of the Mediterranean Sea and the blue and white buildings of Cyclades, the whitewashed mills are an iconic part of Greece's landscape.

If you’re wondering when the best time to visit Greece is, the answer you get may vary depending on your goals, how many people you’re traveling with, and your budget. In general, there’s not a bad time to visit Greece. If you want to enjoy the beach and you don't mind crowds, the summer is the ideal time to visit. If your goal is sightseeing with comfortable (but not unbearable) weather, it’s best to travel in the late spring or the early fall, once the crowds have left. Although Greece is not a particularly large country, it pays to check your exact destination for average temperatures before booking.

The famous island of Santorini is found 300 kilometers southeast of Athens, in the Cyclades. Besides being one of the most Instagrammed locations in Greece and in all the world, Santorini is known for its caldera – a volcanic crater and 300-meter-tall walls that rise from the sea. Because of its volcanic past, the island of Santorini has a rainbow of colors in its cliffs, which are caused by deposits of volcanic rock.
