What is an AFM Useful For?
An AFM is necessary for purchasing a property in Greece. An AFM is also needed if you plan to get a Greek residency permit, to file taxes in Greece, to secure a rental contract, and to open a bank account.
Like tax ID numbers in many other countries, an AFM is unique to you, and you keep it your whole life.
How Do I Get a Greek Tax Number?
It is common in Greece to hire an accountant or lawyer when applying for an AFM. What is a Power of Attorney?
The Power of Attorney (POA) is a key step in the process of buying a house in Greece. With a POA, your lawyer can also represent you throughout the entire purchase process and take any necessary actions on your behalf, even when you’re not in Greece. For example, with a POA, a Greek lawyer can apply for a Greek Tax Number and sign the final purchase contract on your behalf.
Can I Get a Greek Tax Number Myself?
It is technically possible to get an AFM yourself. However, the process is much simpler and quicker if done through a lawyer or accountant, who can perform the process for you digitally, once you provide power of attorney. Most of the process happens in Greek, so working with a Greek lawyer or accountant can save you a lot of time spent in translations.
How Much Does it Cost to Get a Greek Tax Number?
A tax number is issued free of charge by the tax authorities on the presentation of a valid identity document and after completing a special application form. What Documents Do I Need to Open an AFM?
- Copy of your passport or ID
- Father’s name and surname
- Mother’s name and surname
- Full home address abroad (outside Greece)
- Temporary address in Greece (if known)
- Foreign tax ID number
- Mobile phone number
- A Signed Power of Attorney
**If applying without a Power of Attorney, an authorization form with an authenticated signature. (Note that a simple signature will not be accepted).

How Long Does it Take to Get an AFM?
Getting your AFM Greek tax number typically takes 2/3 business days, but it could take longer depending on how busy the tax office is.
Do I Need an AFM if I Buy a Home in Greece With My Company?
