Does this island look familiar? The most famous scene in Mamma Mia was filmed on Skopelos. As one of the greenest islands in Greece, almost 80% of the island is covered with a green expanse of pine trees. It’s no wonder that Skopelos is also called the “green and blue island” for its combination of forest and pristine waters.
We called on the help of our friend Sophia, experienced Skopelos traveler and founder of @Greecestagram for local insights into Skopelos.
Who is Sophia?
Sophia Dimitriou was born in Athens and always had an immense love for Greece.

Where is Skopelos?
Skopelos is in the Sporades islands, next to Skiathos and Alonisos. While less visited than the popular Cycladic islands, the Sporades islands are off the coast of Volos in Central Greece, and have some of the best natural beauty and wildlife in the country.
Getting to Skopelos
There are four options to get a ferry to Skopelos: Volos, Agios Konstantinos, Thessaloniki, and the island of Kymi. The most popular point of departure is Volos.
Best Beaches in Skopelos
Cape Amarantos
This beach features two curved pine trees that gaze the endless blue sea. The rocky area is perfect for diving and snorkelling while this natural pool and its surroundings will remain unforgettable.
By car, Cape Amarandos is located after the beaches of Stafilos and Velanio. Right before Agnontas port, take a left to the dirt road that will take you to the majestic rocks of Amarandos. If you are renting a boat or have a boat of your own, you can also reach the area by sea.
Stifilos Beach
This beach is found southeast of Skopelos town and is one of the most popular places to lounge on the island. The white sands and crystalline waters are met by tall cliffs and it has the perfect conditions for snorkeling. Many fish tavernas and beach bars are line Stifilos Beach.

Other Food Specialties is Skopelos
It is worth trying the Skopelos plum when on the island, because it is known around the world for its antioxidants. You will find it in several local Skopelos dishes.
For example, the ‘rofos’ fish stew is a local favorite and includes beef or pork with plums, The plum spoon sweet will sometimes be served after a meal.
You should also try the Skopelos’ cheese pie, the dessert ‘hamalia’ made with only three ingredients, and also macaroons for dessert.

Visit the Chapel of Agios Ioannis a.k.a. Mama Mia Chapel
This chapel is a must visit of Skopelos island! Remember Meryl Streep running up to a picturesque church in the Mama Mia movie? This is the Chapel of Agios Ioannis, dedicated to Saint John.
The Chapel stands on top of a sea rock that sticks out of the Mediterranean 100 meters. It takes walking up its 223 steps to enjoy the incredible panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and its surroundings.
Rent a Boat
The Sporades islands have many magical spots worth exploring. If you have a boating license, you can rent a boat and island hop to Skiathos’s Lalaria beach, or Alonissos’s Chrisi Milia. For those who want to remain local, you can visit Spilia Beach, Mavraki beach, Megalo Pefko beach and many more hidden gems of the island!
