Quick Guide to Uber in Greece

If you’re from a major city in the U.S. or Europe and reading this, you’re probably familiar with Uber and other ride-share programs. Depending on where exactly you live, Uber might be cheaper than regular taxis. In some countries, Uber rides are so common that you might hear locals using Uber as a verb. For example: “Let’s Uber to the concert.”

Uber in Greece in 2024

However, in Greece, Uber is a fairly new concept because, for many years, taxi unions have been strong enough to keep other taxi services out of the market. It is not uncommon to speak with Greeks who have not heard of Uber. Uber’s services in Greece are concentrated in Athens, so don’t expect to find a driver when travelling through the distant Peloponnese

Today, Uber has millions of users internationally, and the number of active users on Uber reached over 140 million in the second quarter of 2023, up 15% compared to 2022. 2.4 billion trips were completed during this time.

New Offering: Uber Reserve

This is perhaps Uber’s most powerful new tool for travellers to Greece. In 2023, the Head of EMEA Mobility at Uber said “We’re expecting tourism across Europe to reach record figures this summer.” You can book a ride in advance up to 90 days before, at a fixed price, with Uber Reserve.

When to Use Uber Reserve

This tool is mainly used by business travellers, but it also helps advance planners who like to plan ahead for their summer holidays. What’s more? You can cancel an Uber Reserve up until an hour before pickup, and you will not have a cancellation fee. The service is available in over 90 cities in Europe but will be especially useful in Greece, where it’s hard to find a taxi during the busiest times of the year.

New Offering in 2024: Uber Boats

In Mykonos, Uber just launched a new boat service, which will be available in the summer of 2024 and lets you book a speedboat within the Uber app. You are able to select a number of stops and you pay based on the distance traveled. The boat comes with a licensed captain, so you won’t need to drive the boat yourself.

About Mykonos

Uber boats are ideal for Mykonos, where the island is full of tourists during the height of the summer. Especially in the summer months, it’s hard to find a rental car or even a seat on a minibus. Boats are a convenient (although more expensive) alternative, and you can turn the journey into a day excursion.

Alternatives to Uber in Greece

The most popular alternative to Uber is the FREE NOW app, which locals use for ride-hailing. It is so popular that most taxi drivers use it. Be aware, however, that a small fee is added compared to taking a taxi from the street. Other apps, like Taxiplon, are becoming more popular. If you prefer the old-fashioned way, some call lines are available in Greece that allow you to schedule a taxi pickup. Calling ahead can be useful if you have a time-sensitive appointment or a flight to catch.

Price of Taxis in Greece

The state of Greece sets taxi fares in Athens, and these apply to Uber Taxi as well. The final price you pay is based on your travel time, distance, and luggage charges. Be aware that there is an additional fare in Athens late at night (from midnight until 5:00), and there is a flat rate to get from the airport into the city centre. The same applies for taxis in other cities, like Thessaloniki.
