Few travellers know Nisyros, a Greek small, enchanting island in the Dodecanese, yet it is one of the most geologically unique places in Europe. This volcanic island, home to just over a thousand residents, has recently gained international recognition: Nisyros Geopark officially joined the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network in September 2025, placing the island among the world’s most significant natural heritage sites.
The Nisyros Geopark is an area in Greece that includes the volcano of Nisyros and the surrounding islets, recognised for its exceptional geological, natural, and cultural heritage. It is a "living laboratory" of natural processes, featuring unique volcanic formations and landscapes, with the purpose of protecting natural resources and promoting sustainable, responsible tourism.
Home to 450 plant species, 85 bird species, 7 reptiles, and the rare Monachus monachus seal, Nisyros is a true biodiversity haven. The entire Geopark lies within a protected Natura 2000 area. The inclusion of Nisyros Geopark in the UNESCO network marks a major milestone for Greece’s natural heritage. The application process, which began in 2021 with the scientific support of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the International Hellenic University, was successfully completed in early 2025. The Nisyros Geopark has become a member of a global network of 229 geoparks in 50 countries, which enhances its international reputation. The Geopark contains 10 unique georoutes that every visitor can enjoy:
Other Greek Geoparks that belong to the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network are:
- Lesvos Geopark - Psiloritis (Crete) - Vikos-Aoos (Ioannina) - Helmos-Vouraikos (Northern Peloponnese) - Sitia (Crete) - Grevena-Kozani - Kefalonia-Ithaca - Lavreotiki (Attica) - Meteora-Pili GeoparkAs Mayor Christofis Koroneos noted in a press release, “This international recognition highlights not only the unique natural and cultural wealth of Nisyros, but also the surrounding islets of Pergousa, Pachia, Kondeliousa, and Strongyli, which together form a rare geological mosaic, unique in the world.”
Nisyros is one of the few places in the world where you can literally walk inside a volcano. The island’s famous Stefanos crater, with a depth of 27 metres and a diameter of 330 metres, offers a lunar-like experience surrounded by clouds of gentle steam and the scent of sulphur.
Formed roughly 160,000 years ago, Nisyros is the youngest volcano in the Aegean region. Its last eruptions in 1871 and 1877 left behind a breathtaking caldera and some of the most photogenic geological formations in the Mediterranean.
Beyond geology, Nisyros captivates with its therapeutic hot springs, known since antiquity for their healing properties that help relieve rheumatic and skin conditions. The small villages, such as Mandraki, Nikia, and Emborios, are filled with artistic charm, traditional cafes, and warm hospitality.
For swimming, the island’s best-known beach is Pachia Ammos, located on the eastern coast, offering soft golden sand and crystal-clear waters. Nisyros is located in the southeastern part of the Aegean Sea, northwest of Rhodes, between Kos, Tilos, and Astypalea, and has a permanent population of 1,048 according to the last census conducted in 2021.
As Nisyros gains global attention through its UNESCO recognition, it’s also becoming an intriguing destination for foreign buyers looking for property in Greece. The island combines natural beauty, cultural depth, and a growing focus on sustainability, making it an ideal destination for those seeking an authentic Mediterranean home.
