Location

Known as the “balcony of Apokoronas”, the village Melidoni is built on the foothills of the White Mountains and at an altitude of 450 m. In recent years there has been great scientific and research interest in the caves in the village’s vicinity, such as “Mavro Skiadi” [Black Shadow] which is the largest cave chasm in Greece and one of the largest in the world, going 342 m into the ground.  The area is brimming with history and many important archaeological findings have been unearthed here. The landmark and center of the village’s life is the church with its two towers, while the view from the square where it rests is truly breathtaking, extending down to Souda Bay.
