"The green pearl of the Ionian Sea… Belgians will love Corfu." Rani, Belgian travel blogger.
In this article, we rate the Greek island of Corfu for Belgians as a place to buy a home. With help from Rani, a Belgian travel blogger who has travelled widely in Greece, we explore the best parts of Corfu and why a Belgian would want to buy a home there.
Rani is the maker of Young Wild Free, a Belgian travel blog. She describes herself as "a little world traveler who wants to seek out the most beautiful places on this planet. Wanting to smell, taste, see, feel, and hear other cultures. In short: Experience!"
"I write here about our travel stories. No boring beach vacations, but vacations full of adventure, culture and nature. Trips that enrich your life and make it just that little bit more beautiful. Stop hiding your dreams in a small, dusty and forgotten corner. Time to leap: out into the wide world!"

Corfu, or Kerkyra in Greek, is one of the most popular islands in the Ionian Sea, off western Greece. It is an island full of life, with plenty to discover. Alongside more than 200 kilometres of coastline dotted with wonderful swimming beaches, Corfu offers distinctive traditions, fine hospitality, and exceptional Greek food. With a population of around 100,000 people, Corfu is home to a lively community of locals and a sizeable number of expats. English is spoken almost everywhere, and the lifestyle is considered among the most laid-back and friendliest in Greece.
Corfu's beaches rank among the best in Greece. Paleokastritsa, Sidari, Issos, Ipsos, and Dassia are just a few of the beautiful spots to take a dip.
The picturesque mountain villages are ideal for exploring, offering panoramic views and activities such as hiking, cycling, and horse riding. The island's beauty also reached television audiences through the popular British series The Durrells, which was filmed on Corfu; Kalami Bay in the northeast, long associated with the Durrell family, is one of the island's most picturesque corners.
The island has mild, rainy winters and hot, sunny summers. Daily average temperatures range from around 9.5°C in January to 27°C in August. In the summer months the temperature often reaches 35°C, though sea breezes commonly cool things down, and temperatures drop overnight.
How did we decide which factors matter most to Belgian home buyers? We first asked our sales and legal team, who provide consultation and legal handling to dozens of Belgian clients (both those who do and don't end up purchasing). We then combined this with a small survey of Belgian clients who bought a home, to learn their highest priorities.
Corfu has one of the most beautiful coastlines in Greece, stretching over 200 kilometres, longer than the coastlines of most Greek islands, including Santorini and Mykonos. Parts of Corfu remain undeveloped, with real opportunities for beachfront homes. Popular areas for a sea view include Paleokastritsa, Sidari, Issos, Ipsos, and Dassia.

From Belgium, you can fly directly to Corfu from Brussels in under three hours, with several carriers offering direct flights during the travel season. Only a few Greek islands have international airports, so a direct flight is a real advantage. It can even take longer for some Greeks on the mainland to reach Corfu, because of the ferry crossing.

Compared to other popular islands, Corfu is more affordable: average prices in the Cyclades stood at around 3,500 euros per square metre.

If you choose one of Corfu's most popular towns, like Corfu Town, Kavos, Roda, or Kalami, you will easily find English speakers, and often French and Dutch speakers too. This part of Greece is growing quickly in popularity, so expect plenty of visitors. In the more remote areas of Corfu, the community of English speakers will naturally be smaller.

The first thing that probably comes to your mind when you hear the words “Ionian Sea” is its islands. On the mainland side, though, there are a few regions that can be considered a practical and smart choice for international property buyers.

The Peloponnese gets far less international attention than Santorini or Mykonos, and for buyers, that is part of the appeal. The peninsula has a long and varied coastline, mountain villages that stay lived-in through winter, and some of the country's best-known ancient sites, Mycenae, Olympia, and Epidaurus among them. Prices here have stayed closer to reality than on the popular islands, mostly because foreign demand arrived later. If you are willing to look past the obvious destinations, the Peloponnese gives you more for your money and a region that does not shut down in October.

One of Greece's unparalleled advantages is the bounty of islands it offers, with countless places to explore, all set against the backdrop of the endless blue sea. However, figuring out where each of these islands is located can be tricky. The purpose of this guide, therefore, is to provide a simple and easy-to-understand overview of Greece's island groups.

It's a sensible thing to check before you start house-hunting, and the answer is a qualified yes. There is a train, but it only reaches the northern edge of the Peloponnese. Athens connects by rail to Kiato, and on towards Aigio, with a bus completing the run to Patras while the line is being finished. Beyond that, the peninsula has very little passenger rail, so the popular spots like Nafplio, Kalamata, and the Mani are reached by road. For most buyers, that makes the bus or the car the practical choice. Here's the full picture, and what it means if you're thinking of a home here.
