Why should I buy a home in Corfu if I am Dutch? How does it rank compared to other destinations in Greece for me? What are the most popular areas to buy a home in Corfu?
In this article, we’ll take you on a tour of Corfu with the help of Liesbeth (aka @miss.worldtraveller), a Dutch travel blogger and local Corfu expert.
Liesbeth (aka @miss.worldtraveller) is a Dutch travel blogger and Instagram personality. In her own words:
“Hi, hi and hi! I am Liesbeth, and I love backpacking. When I travel, I take my backpack, the Lonely Planet, and my camera. I have seen many places in the world, living and volunteering abroad. My travel bucket list is still growing. Backpack trips, road trips, and city trips are my favorite. I love everything that is beautiful, unique, hip, or slightly different than usual. I also look for this during my travels, and I like to share those tips with everyone around me!”
You can find Liesbeth on Instagram and on her Corfu travel blog.
Corfu, or Kerkyra as referred to in Greek, is one of the most popular islands in the Ionian Sea, western Greece. It is an island full of life and beauty with lots to discover. In addition to a 216-kilometer coastline full of amazing swimming beaches, Corfu offers many unique traditions, along with fine hospitality and exceptional Greek food. With a population of just over 100,000 people, Corfu is home to a vibrant community made up of locals and a large number of expats. Just about everyone on the island speaks English, and the lifestyle is considered to be one of the most laid-back and friendliest in Greece.
Corfu’s beaches rank among the best in Greece – and the world. Paleokastritsa, Sidari, Issos, Ipsos and Dassia beaches are just a few of the stunningly beautiful spots to take a dip.
The picturesque mountain villages are ideal for exploration, offering panoramic views and a range of activities such as hiking, cycling and horse riding. The island’s beauty was featured in the popular British TV series, The Durrells, which was filmed in Kalami Bay, in the northeast at one of Corfu’s most picturesque spots.
The island has mild, rainy winters and hot, sunny summers. The daily average temperature ranges from 9.5 °C in January to 27 °C in August. In the summer months, the temperature often hits 35 °C, though sea breezes commonly cool things down as temperatures also drop overnight.
How did we decide what factors are most important for Dutch home buyers? To solve this challenge, we first asked our sales and legal team, who offer consultation and legal handling to dozens of Dutch clients (both those who do and don’t purchase a property). We then combined this data with a small survey of Dutch clients who ultimately purchased a home to find out their highest priorities.
Corfu has one of the most beautiful coastlines of any area in Greece, and it spans over 200 kilometers. This is a longer coastline than a majority of Greece’s islands, including Santorini and Mykonos. Some parts of Corfu are undeveloped, and there are many opportunities for beachfront homes. Some popular areas to get a sea view in Corfu are near Paleokastritsa, Sidari, Issos, Ipsos and Dassia.

From the Netherlands, you can fly directly to Corfu from Amsterdam in about 3 hours. Currently, EasyJet offers direct flights. There are several flights per week from Amsterdam to Corfu. Only a few Greek islands have international airports, so it is unique to find a direct flight. It might even take longer for some Greeks on the mainland to get to Corfu, because of the necessary Greek ferry ride.

If you choose one of Corfu’s most popular towns, like Corfu Town, Kavos, Roda, and Kalama, you will surely find English speakers or even French and Dutch speakers. This area of Greece is growing a lot in popularity, so you can expect to see many visitors. If you choose to buy a home in the more remote areas of Corfu, the community of English speakers will likely be smaller.

The first thing that probably comes to your mind when you hear the words “Ionian Sea” is its islands. On the mainland side, though, there are a few regions that can be considered a practical and smart choice for international property buyers.

The Peloponnese gets far less international attention than Santorini or Mykonos, and for buyers, that is part of the appeal. The peninsula has a long and varied coastline, mountain villages that stay lived-in through winter, and some of the country's best-known ancient sites, Mycenae, Olympia, and Epidaurus among them. Prices here have stayed closer to reality than on the popular islands, mostly because foreign demand arrived later. If you are willing to look past the obvious destinations, the Peloponnese gives you more for your money and a region that does not shut down in October.

It's a sensible thing to check before you start house-hunting, and the answer is a qualified yes. There is a train, but it only reaches the northern edge of the Peloponnese. Athens connects by rail to Kiato, and on towards Aigio, with a bus completing the run to Patras while the line is being finished. Beyond that, the peninsula has very little passenger rail, so the popular spots like Nafplio, Kalamata, and the Mani are reached by road. For most buyers, that makes the bus or the car the practical choice. Here's the full picture, and what it means if you're thinking of a home here.
