Have you ever dreamed about living in Greece, but busy, touristy destinations repel you? Worry not! In this series, we will be introducing some of our handpicked favorites in Greece.
Kalo Nero is a small village located in the region of Messinia, in western Peloponnese. It is nestled on an extensive coastline, and its golden sand covers over 14km in length. It is an ideal destination for families and nature lovers.
The sandy beach of Kalo Nero appeals greatly to those of us dreaming of relaxing holidays by the sea. Kalo Nero is unique for its coastline, which is the home of sea turtles. A species of the Caretta-Caretta turtle nests and reproduces there, so the beach is protected. The quiet waters are also exceptional for snorkelling! Additionally, the stretching of the beach creates the perfect conditions for enjoying various water sports.
Kalo Nero has already been tested by our clients. Following, we reference the experiences of Peter and Marijke Bakker, who bought a house in Kalo Nero with the assistance of Elxis. “The peace and quiet and the overwhelming vastness of the area (Natura 2000) appealed to us, as well as the numerous streams, sometimes with beautiful dragonflies and butterflies.” Besides beautiful beaches and guaranteed majestic sunsets, the area of Messinia is rich in history and archaeological sites. At a distance of only 5km from Kalo Nero, one can find the Site of Peristeria, a Mycenean settlement. Within an hour, on the other hand, one can reach the Temple of Apollo and the ancient city of Messini, which are marvels of ancient Greek civilizations and culture. “We are happy with our purchase and hope to spend many happy days in Kalo Nero and its surroundings.”

The first thing that probably comes to your mind when you hear the words “Ionian Sea” is its islands. On the mainland side, though, there are a few regions that can be considered a practical and smart choice for international property buyers.

The Peloponnese gets far less international attention than Santorini or Mykonos, and for buyers, that is part of the appeal. The peninsula has a long and varied coastline, mountain villages that stay lived-in through winter, and some of the country's best-known ancient sites, Mycenae, Olympia, and Epidaurus among them. Prices here have stayed closer to reality than on the popular islands, mostly because foreign demand arrived later. If you are willing to look past the obvious destinations, the Peloponnese gives you more for your money and a region that does not shut down in October.

It's a sensible thing to check before you start house-hunting, and the answer is a qualified yes. There is a train, but it only reaches the northern edge of the Peloponnese. Athens connects by rail to Kiato, and on towards Aigio, with a bus completing the run to Patras while the line is being finished. Beyond that, the peninsula has very little passenger rail, so the popular spots like Nafplio, Kalamata, and the Mani are reached by road. For most buyers, that makes the bus or the car the practical choice. Here's the full picture, and what it means if you're thinking of a home here.
