Cretan music is the oldest music in Greece and perhaps all of Europe. Even in ancient times, excavations show that in Crete, there was music. When the Venetians ruled Crete, the Italians helped create music schools in the area and added influence from Byzantine music. As a result, Cretan music is a lot different than the music on the mainland. It is complicated and in ⅞ or 9/8 time, which are rare in Western music.

As part of the effort to complete its Forest Cadastre, Greece has re-surveyed its land to separate public forest land from privately owned land. Declaring properties to the Land Registry has not been simple for Greece's cities, since many municipalities lack ownership deeds for schools, municipal buildings, and public squares. Forest land includes grasslands on semi-mountainous, mountainous, and uneven terrain; parts of parks or groves that have non-forest vegetation but are organically connected to the whole park or grove; and an organic set of wild plants with a woody trunk on the necessary surface of the ground. This article explains what those designations mean, and how to check whether your own plot contains protected forest land.

The typical age of home buyers in Greece is changing, as more and more 30- 55-year-olds look to invest in the Greek real estate market. These are not the usual European pensioners, who used to be the main buyers of Greek real estate. This new, younger group of buyers sees buying a holiday home more like an investment, not just as somewhere to spend the summer. They are acting with their brains more than with their heart, and the first consideration is profit.

Halkidiki (sometimes spelled as Chalkidiki) is a peninsula in northern Greece that is found to the East of Thessaloniki. It is 120 kilometers long and has 3 “legs” which protrude into the Mediterranean Sea. Depending on which part of the peninsula you find yourself on, you’ll be surrounded by either beach bars, nightclubs, or centuries-old Byzantine monasteries. The one commonality between every part of Halkidiki is the great wine. Wine has been crafted in Halkidiki since the times of antiquity. In the 20th century, a phylloxera epidemic destroyed many of the grapevines, but the industry has been restored to the glory of its past. The following are the best places to stop on your wine journey through Halkidiki.

The palm forest of Preveli is found below the Monastery of Preveli, next to the Kourtaliótiko Gorge. The beach is known for its extensive forest of the Cretan date palm, which is known as Phoenix Theophrastii. The Preveli palm forest is the second-largest palm forest in Crete behind Vai Palm Forest, which is on the east side of the island of Crete. The forest is not exclusively palm trees but is also home to osiers, reeds, oleanders, and locust varieties. Unfortunately, a fire wiped out a large portion of the palm forest in 2010, but it rebounded quickly, and within a few years, new trees had already sprouted. The Preveli palm forest is a paradise– an oasis compared to the dry terrain which surrounds the area. The Preveli palm forest is found 38 kilometers from Rethymnon and can be reached by car.
